HVISK X JULIE EBENS

HVISK ATELIER is a place to be creative - and to get inspired. We at HVISK meet a lot of artists on social media and in our ATELIER we ask them to interpret our collections and express them through their art.

For our next ATELIER collaboration we teamed up with the Danish and Copenhagen based girl, Julie Eben. We had a chat with her about her ceramics and the collaboration she did with us.  HVISK: WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?

JULIE:  I am a self-employed ceramicist. My brand is called Julie Ebens and I work from my studio on Refshaleøen in Copenhagen.

HVISK: WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE MEDIUM?

JULIE: I work with clay and glaze. I use stoneware which is a high fire clay that is ideal for tableware, because when the clay is fired it becomes water resistant and is therefore safe for everyday use.

HVISK: WHAT DOES HVISK MEAN TO YOU?

JULIE: To me HVISK is a modern, fun and bold brand. What appeals to me about HVISK is both the creativity and boldness of the designs, the sustainability aspects of the materials and the transparency when it comes to production and workers rights and safety.

HVISK: WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE ART WORK?

JULIE: The inspiration for my ceramics pieces and images came directly from the Space Collection. I wanted to create pieces that would work alongside the collection as well as incorporate the atmosphere from the collection into my work.

I knew I wanted to make a rocket stool and a relief pretty much straight away. I don’t really like to overthink the design process too much but could rather just start creating and see what happens. The process of working with clay is slow and all the different steps forces you to be patient, so I would always prefer to just get my hands in the material and see what happens. That’s how all the pieces came to life. The stool or side table was created as a centerpiece to showcase the collection. With the relief I tried to make something that had the same atmosphere and playfulness as the theme of the collection itself.

Mugs are my absolute favorite pieces to create so I wanted to incorporate the prints and colors into a little collection that matched my favorite bags from the Space Collection. The idea of matching the mugs with the bags is to show how choosing your everyday objects is not a vain or superficial action but something that can express your personal taste, mood and identity.
