HVISK ATELIER is a place to be creative - and to get inspired. We at HVISK meet a lot of artists on social media and in our ATELIER we ask them to interpret our collections and express them through their art. For our latest ATELIER we asked, Mexican born, painter and artist Andrea Villalón to create something inspired by our latest collection, SPACE. HVISK: WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?

ANDREA: I’m a painter, I paint for a living and I’m lucky enough to have two amazing galleries that represent me in Mexico and Europe that helps me with the “for a living” part (Shout out to Machete and Brigade)

I’m also a cat-sitter in London, best job ever. All I must do is hang out with cats in strangers' houses all by myself.

HVISK: WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE MEDIUM? 

ANDREA: I used to be more of a photographer. I started taking photos when I was 14 (nothing good obviously) but never really stopped and did a BFA where I graduated with a photo book called ‘In transit’.

My photos were mostly street photos, so I used to go out on long walks through Mexico City. During college I became more homebound and a bit agoraphobic so I had to switch into a medium that would allow me to be indoors. That’s how I started painting. I think it suits me more as I’m (still) very solitary and homebound. I also work with stained glass which I learnt from my father.

HVISK: WHAT DOES HVISK MEAN TO YOU?

ANDREA: HVISK to me (much like beautiful Copenhagen) is a fun and elegant playground where you can be sophisticated and creative. It’s a classic, a re-invented classic. I also love the name which means ‘whisper’ for those who don’t know.

 

HVISK: WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE ART WORK?

ANDREA: My main inspiration was the space theme which runs all along the new collection. I imagined the bags were made from materials collected from space and each one was from a different planet.

 

While making the images I also had that ‘science fair school project’ feeling of working on a model that your mom helps you with and you’re at the kitchen table trying different materials and listening to music while having dinner. Somehow this Atelier brought back a lot of childhood memories (wholesome ones).

The past ateliers were also very inspiring! I really enjoyed going through the archive. While reading other interviews and looking at their images I felt like peeping through a hole into the studios of all these cool artists and creatives, it kind of fueled me.
