HVISK ATELIER is a place to be creative - and to get inspired. We at HVISK meet a lot of artists on social media and in our ATELIER we ask them to interpret our collections and express them through their art. Their interpretations inspire us to look at our collections and what we do in a different way - and hopefully they inspire you too. For our next ATELIER collaboration we teamed up with the Belgian and Ghent based girl, Shirley Villavicencio Pizango. We had a chat with her about her work and the art work she did for us
HVISK: WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?
SHIRLEY: After I graduated from KASK with a Master’s in Visual Arts, I started to teach art at different schools. After that I decided to fully focus on my own painting career. I participated in a post-graduate program at Hisk for two years. Now I work as an artist, participating in exhibitions in Belgium, Peru, Berlin, LA and other places. I also participate in different Artist-in-residence programs in Japan, Belgium and soon LA and Peru. I really enjoy being in my studio.
HVISK: WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE MEDIUM?
SHIRLEY: I mainly paint, but I also make sculptures, ceramics, objects, my own clothes, I work with analog photography and soon I would like to learn how to make furniture. I like to create things, express myself through my paintings. I enjoy using bright colors and experiment with different textures. Every new technique I learn contributes to my work field in a certain way. The clothes I make are also visible in my paintings. I also like to collect objects like ceramics, posters and African masks. This is a part of my inspiration to create my paintings. And of course, my Peruvian background.
HVISK: WHAT DOES HVISK MEAN TO YOU?
SHIRLEY: A conscious brand with an eye for good design. Finally, a vegan product that is also beautiful. Also, the fact that you can have a beautiful bag made from recycled materials makes this brand special. It’s really the final touch on my outfit: the love for the environment. I really enjoy when people ask me where my bag is from.
HVISK: WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE ART WORK?
SHIRLEY: My own world, my studio, my paintings, the drawings I really love to make, when I’m in a good mood. The nature, the people and the interaction between the two. Trying to depict them in a harmonious way.
